Saturday

Sorry, I got a little behind. Much has happened the past few days, although as dad previously stated, we didn't get to see any of it until yesterday thanks to awesome Colorado weather. Anyways! Steve continues to talk a little bit here and there. He does more whispering than he does actual speaking, though, for two reasons. One, he has experienced some vocal cord damage because of the tubes he had going down his throat and inbetween his vocal cords those first few weeks. This should heal in time, but heal completely, we aren't guaranteed. It's another wait and see thing. Also, even though his trach was removed on Wednesday, the hole still hasn't completely closed up yet, so when he attempts to speak, some air is still escaping through the hole, thus making it difficult for his voice to have some or any volume to it. The hole should close in the next few days. Last night Steve was able to name his occupational therapist when dad asked him to, even though he hadn't seen him since that morning, which says a lot about his daily memory starting to come around. However, we know he won't remember atleast the week leading up to his accident, and probably a lot further back, but it's too early to say to say for sure. He is able to count numbers in correct order and can perform daily living tasks such as showering and shaving, with some assistance. During speech therapy yesterday, a spoon of apple sauce was put in front of him and he took it and ate it. Today the same was done with bacon and scrambled eggs, and he ate all of it without being prompted. He still gets tube feedings for the time being, until atleast next Tuesday, but he is able to eat during his speech therapy sessions. On Sunday we plan on giving him Graeters ice cream that was sent to us from the people of KBC (thank you so much!). He is able to tell us if and where he is having pain. Last night dad asked him if his head hurt, and he said "slightly" in a whisper. We thought that was an interesting word choice considering the level he is at right now. Steve continues to do better every day in physical therapy, walking up and down flights of stairs and the hallway several times per session. While he is doing better with answering questions, he is definitely still confused from time to time. Yesterday when the speech therapist asked him where he lives, he said "Ohio state." He uses a lot more expressions now and can focus on a person or object for far longer than he could several days ago. We ask for prayer for the pain he is having in his head, the healing of his brain, and that his vocal cords would heal so we could hear his full voice someday soon!

Dear Schmits:
It is good to hear that steve is doing better. It sounds like time is what it takes. When you folks describe his progress it sounds like the steve I knew at MHS.Tell him that Hanson says to keep on keeping on and fighting the good fight.

Dear Schmits,
My thoughts are with you this Christmas morning. To be truthful, I am not a Christmas person but reading the improvments that Steve is making and thinking about all that your family has been through fills me with great wonder and inspiration. I praise God for the joy that I see in you Georgina and the hope in Steve's steady recovery. God bless you all. Love Jennifer Rodgers

Merry Christmas Schmits and Jeters from Ky! The improvements Steve is making are fantastic and I have complete faith that they'll continue until Steve is completely whole. We had a young man at our school who was in a car accident with results that were almost identical to what Stve had with his accident. Steve's recovery has also been very similiar with improvements coming rapidly once they started. I'm happy to tell you that Carter is completely back to normal (his normal anyway ;)- he didn't even have to have any special accomadations made when he returned to school. His accident was the last 2 weeks of school and it was amazing to see what God was able to do in that short time. I'm the Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor at the school and we were able to have prayer for him in the gym (over 500 kids attended)and youth pastors were allowed to be with me up at the school to pray with the kids. It was amazing! In all the years that I've been a part of the school I've never seen the students more cohesive and focused on one goal- praying for Carter and raising money for his family (we raised almost $4,000).The doctors even reluctantly admitted his recovery was "probably" a miracle.
I'm sure your faith, dedication, and commitment to Steve's recovery have been an amazing witness to those around you. Please know that we continue to pray for all of you, especially Steve.
Love, Rita (Brock)

Hello Georgina, Beth, Tom & Steve-
God is so good and continues to answer prayers. I read that God is showing you progress each day that Steve is making and the praise goes to God! I am happy for you all and it is great that Tom & Beth can see Steve's improvemnt prior to their departure. I will do my best to help Tom out when he returns - who knows what he would eat on his own. I continue to pray for Steve's healing and God's peace for your all.
love, Sharon

Hi Steve and Schmits famliy,
Thank you so much for the updates, Beth and Mr. Schmits. Although I haven't you in a while, Steve, I can tell you still have your strong determination to succeed and straight-forward way of expressing yourself. I used to try to fight back when you would pick on me in third grade :), but by the time we got to High School I stopped trying to beat you in our bizarre contests and crazy Season's antics. Your drive and tenacity were unstoppable, and I know that you will use these qualities to overcome this challenge. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and I am so thankful for your incredible progress.
Love,
Annie Kiener
